Prepreg is the state-of-the-art manufacturing process for composites in aerospace and other advanced industries. The fibres are impregnated with the resin and formed into a thin tape, the so-called prepreg. These prepregs are cut into plies with our automated prepreg cutter machines, and laminated in a mould to form the product. To ensure the highest quality, all our laminating is carried out in cleanrooms with controlled temperature and humidity.
After laminating, the product needs to be cured. We can use our autoclaves that can generate high consolidation pressures to ensure the highest quality of the end product. Alternatively, we can use out-of-autoclave prepregs that are cured in an oven or heated tool with vacuum pressure only. This method can greatly reduce the cost of the part and gives us the opportunity to cure products that are larger than our autoclaves. Our largest autoclave is 2.7 meter in diameter and 13 meter long.
We have many years of experience with this process, and have used many different material combinations. The fibre materials and resin systems are in almost all cases specifically selected for each project, to ensure the optimal balance between performance and cost efficiency. Besides the PAN-based fibres which are the industry standard, we also use pitch-based carbon fibres to make parts with high stiffness and low thermal expansion.
