News : JIP on the Thermoplastic Composite Riser

Most of the newest oil discoveries are found offshore in ever deeper waters. Current technologies in Top Tensioned Risers, Steel Catenary Risers and Flexibles are approaching their technical limit. Some developments push these limits with current technology, increasing the cost to unprecedented levels.

Airborne proposes a Thermoplastic Composite Riser (TCR) as alternative to current solutions, including Free-Standing Hybrid Risers (FSHRs). The TCR will achieve a break-through performance improvement in terms of weight, top tension, fatigue, stiffness, strain and cost of installation.

Airborne Composite Tubulars, MCS Advanced Subsea Engineering and OTM Consulting organise a Joint Industry Programme in response to a call for proposal issued by the ITF in Aberdeen, UK. This programme is sponsored by 5 leading oil companies and a leading contractor.

The Joint Industry Programme aims to prove the concept of a Thermoplastic Composite Riser. This programme includes the TCR design and global analysis of several, sponsor determined, scenarios, and the manufacture and testing of large scale pipe samples. The programme starts July 15 2009.
